Guide to Acrylic Painting

Getting started with acrylic paint on canvas

Introduction to acrylic painting

Acrylic paint is a great painting technique for both beginners and advanced artists. It dries quickly, has an intense color and can be used in many different techniques. If you're new to acrylic painting, this guide will help you get started with the right materials and techniques.

Material list for acrylic paint

To get a good start with acrylic paint, it's important to use the right materials. Here is a list of what you need:

1. Acrylic paint

  • Choose quality paint from brands like Golden, Amsterdam or similar.
  • Start with the basic colors: red, yellow, blue, black and white. From there you can mix many shades.
  • You can choose between two types of paint, and for beginners we like to use regular paint in tubes or fluid acrylic paint for more fluid effects.

2. Canvas or painting boards

  • Choose a primed canvas with a good grammage, typically 360 g/m² or more.
  • Alternatively, you can use a painting board. I don't recommend watercolor paper for Acrylic painting exercises.

3. brushes

  • Flat brushes for backgrounds and large surfaces.
  • Round brushes for details.
  • Fan brushes for soft transitions.
  • Spatulas or palette knives for texture

4. Palette and mixing equipment

  • A palette for mixing colors or an old newspaper or paper plate
  • A spray bottle with water to keep the paint moist.

5. Water and cloths

  • Use a cup with water to clean brushes.
  • Paper towels or rags to wipe off excess paint.

6. Mediums

  • Acrylic medium for thinning can be considered after you have started painting with acrylic painting. You don't need one in the beginning unless you are painting portraits.

Acrylic painting techniques

1. Layer-by-layer technique

Acrylic paint dries quickly, making it easy to work in layers. Start with a light base color and build up the layers gradually.

2. Dry brush technique

A dry brush with a little paint can create texture and striking brush strokes.

3. mix water and color

Mix acrylic paint with water or medium to create transparent layers that add depth.

4. Using the palette knife

A palette knife is great for creating textures and structure

5. Spray or splash effect

Use a toothbrush or paintbrush to spray paint for a dynamic look. This can come later.

Tips to get you started

  • Cover your work area to avoid painting on anything other than the painting.
  • Experiment with the amount of color
  • Play with painting color mixtures in small experiments
  • Remember to clean brushes thoroughly after use otherwise they cannot be used again.
